We are CARES (Community Awareness Response Encouraging Sustainability), a group of individuals who want the Village of Hampshire to put its residents and the sustainability of our natural environment at the forefront of each stage of new development.
We formed in response to the proposal to rezone tracts of farmland near residents’ homes to M2 and M3 manufacturing. It is our conviction that this would have been passed with little to no discussion had it not been for our community’s response.
Although we were able to postpone these tracts from being rezoned accordingly, it is paramount to continually monitor Hampshire’s Planning and Zoning Commissions and Board of Trustees agendas to guard against future proposals that would similarly threaten residents’ wells, traffic safety, centuries old oak trees, and local wildlife.
We believe it is the Village of Hampshire’s fiduciary obligation to its residents and neighbors to sustainably develop its lands, to preserve the area’s natural beauty, and to effectively manage and prevent the pollution or contamination of its resources.
We honor those that began the awareness campaign-
The C.A.R.E. group of the early 2000's was formed when the developers were going for annexation on the hundreds of acres of land they bought up in the Hampshire area. Citizens were shocked to see what they were presenting to the town officials to be voted on. Hundreds of citizens spoke up at all the public hearings. Experts on the aquifer, wells, effects on the environment,, etc spoke up as they also were baffled by what was was getting voted yes to. The dedicated CARE members put in hundreds of hours to get the independent expert information to the leaders.
